area north of the city across the Merrimack River, known as Pawtucketville. My
grandparents, Georgianna and Alfred Cloutier lived in Lowell’s “Le Petit Canada” (Little
area for much of their lives.
According to a 1900 Lowell Census, my great grandfather Alfred Maxium Cloutier was lis
years old and was employed as a cotton mill filling boy. His place of birth is listed a
never knew my great grandfather Alfred. He died in July 1924. In the same 1900 ce
grandfather Alfred was listed as being 10 years old and at school. In the 1910 Lowell cen
my great grandfather and grandfather were listed as working in the cotton mills. Alfre
and Alfred Jr. were listed as being 50 years old and 20 years old respectively. In the 194
my grandfather Alfred was listed as 50 years old and a laborer.
My paternal grandparents lived across the river in the Pawtucketville part of Lowell. Afte
parent’s marriage, and when I was a very young child, they lived in the downtown area
Merrimack Street, then in the projects on Adam Street and later on Salem Street before
across the river to the town of Dracut, when I was about 10 years old.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t until after my parents and grandparents passed away, that it occ
me to ask how they met. It is interesting to wonder however, how my mother, who was
and lived on the city side of the Merrimack River and my dad was raised and lived on t
